What is Sedex?

Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) is basically a platform that helps companies show they’re doing business responsibly.
It’s a shared database where suppliers upload information about how they treat workers, manage health & safety, protect the environment, and run their business ethically.
Buyers (like retailers or big brands) use it to check and monitor their suppliers without sending endless questionnaires.
Think of it as: A common place to prove you meet ethical and social standards so customers can trust you.
Sedex itself doesn’t certify companies - it just helps collect, share, and assess data (often alongside audits like SMETA).

What is SMETA?
SMETA (Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit) is an ethical audit that checks how a workplace operates.
It looks at things like worker rights, health & safety, wages, working hours, and business ethics.
The results are uploaded to Sedex, so customers can see them instead of auditing you themselves.
Think of it as: An independent ethical check-up of a company.
SMETA is the most common audit used with Sedex.
It’s not a certification (you don’t “pass” or “fail”), it highlights issues and improvements, not just compliance.
Labour, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics are just some of the areas covered by the audit.
